Calico Cargo by Albert M. Ottenheimer, music by Helen Taverniti and George F. McKay, lyrics by Pearl Albino and Florence Stewart, tells the story of the Mercer Girls who came from the East in the 1860's to find husbands in Seattle, Washington Territory.
In the Players' production, one girl was always late for her entrance. Director Earl Kelly finally made her late entry part of the show. She was to rush in, late, and fall, with her hoop skirts sailing up. The first time the fall was accidental and her hoops went up toward the audience. The bit was added to the show, but with her hoops flying up away from the audience.
The Calico Cargo posters lacked visual appeal. To remedy this and reinforce the show's title, calico dresses and bonnets were cut from leftover costume fabric and glued on each poster. This extra work made the posters more eye-catching.
